The Mysterious Man

Although most sightings of the mysterious man were brief and at long distances, he appeared to be wearing black clothes and boots, a chain shirt, and a black cloak, as well as wielding a composite longbow and two swords. He was apparently nearly identical to Kael Varda, aside from being completely colored in shades of gray.

Repeatedly, Kael Varda was harassed by this shadowy figure, who always seemed to elude capture or permanent defeat. When apparently slain by Darius in the streets of Nighthold, the Mysterious Man disappeared in a cloud of smoke and laughter. Darius recognized some of the magic involved and had suspicions that the Mysterious Man was still alive. This suspicion was proved true when the Mysterious Man suddenly appeared in Deathsgate, thousands of miles from the location of their last encounter, less than a day later. In that combat, the Mysterious Man attacked a person other than Kael for the first time, mortally wounding Darius with a deadly arrow.

Droverson and Hazerath were later proven correct in their belief that the Mysterious Man was some sort of ghost who may have some of the benefits or properties of a shadow assassin spell. After having the shadow assassin spell dispelled by Vanessa Mackelroy, the ghost of Roscoe Jenkins was revealed to be the animating force beheind the doppelganger.
